Further to a previous posting;

Whilst trying to install a an HP scanner I get a *install failed* message
with the comment :-

* The Class Installer has denied the request to install or upgrade this
device*

Can anyone suggest what might be the problem?

BTW - when I try to uninstall the device this also fails due to * the device
may be required for booting* [ or some such message]

For Info: XP Pro SP1 with all the latest updates.

TIA

Have you checked HP's website for the latest drivers? Do they have drivers
for XP for your device or only earlier versions of Windows?

In addition to Michael's advice, if there are no XP drivers, for some
things, 2000 drivers may work. If neither is the case, go to the store.

Also, unless the drivers come with XP, make sure you install the drivers
before you plug in the device. Plug in the device when the on-screen
instructions tell you to--or after you reboot.

Hey Courtney,

Some are supposed to be done the other way. I don't know about the posters
hardware, as best I recall, an HP printer I had needed to be hooked up
physically and then let the system look for the drivers from the disk.
Getting old, maybe, I forgot?

The strange thing is that this problem has only come about after a virgin
re-install of XP (same machine, all H/W identical etc.). The scanner worked
fine on the old installation with the *original* drivers i.e no updates were
required.

It varies though most USB devices, if they come with software usually
instruct to install the software first. However, if there is no software,
you can do nothing but connect first and let the system try to find the
drivers.

My HP5470c went the other way - had it working, stopped working after
trying to 'repair' an XP problem. Did a format C:, re-install XP and
all updates, then installed software from HP (Precision Scan v3.13),
hooked up USB cable, then power and works fine now [knock heavily on
wood!!]

Don't forget to install teh USB2 patches ( yes, more than 1 !), and
set the "USB Root Hub" to NOT allow it to power down. Device Manager,
USB devices, properties, power management

good luck
