I have an older computer with windows 98 and a bunch of
programs etc that I don't need anymore. I want to delete
all of the file, programs etc from this computer and
install windows XP. Can I simply format the computer and
install XP or do I have to do the drive partition using
the fdisk tool?

FDISK is not necessary.
The Windows XP CD will do it all.
First, check this link especially #3 Upgrade Advisor to be sure the
computer is ready for Windows XP:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/upgrading/default.asp

Clean Installation:
Disconnect all peripherals (camera, printer, scanner, etc)
Go to BIOS and set CDROM as boot device before hard drive.
Insert Windows XP CD and reboot.
At "Press any key to boot to CDROM" quickly press a key and follow the
prompts for a Clean installation:
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp
Delete all partitions in step 5 if you desire to erase all data on the
hard drive.
Partitioning and formatting will be done automatically.
All data will be destroyed, back-up important data first.

After you are finished, you will need to load the appropriate drivers.

Hi, Tim.

You should never need FDISK again. ;<)

Just boot from the WinXP CD-ROM and follow the prompts - including the very
early one that asks if you want to repartition and reformat your HD. Say
yes. ;<)

Once you get up and running with WinXP, find Disk Management. It will do
all that FDISK did, and more. It will create and delete partitions, format
them, assign and reassign drive letters - and a few more things that you can
read about it its Help file. ;<)
