How do I disable this stupid feature that WindowXP has of
automatically selecting the icon that my pointer is
resting on. It deleted a important file before I realized
the pointer was sitting on the delete icon.

It is not an XP feature.
Reduce the touchpad sensitivity or disable the "Tap to click" option. This
is a problem always occurs with touchpads.

Hi,
Try this: From Windows Explorer, select menu Tools | Folder Options... Then
on General tab, select 'Double-click to open an item (single-click to
select)' option and OK.
