Dereck, if this problem has only started within the last
month or 6 weeks then it may very well be the notorious
Windows update Q811493

You can see if you have downloaded this patch by going
into Add Remove programmes. If you see it there I would
suggest you remove it.

Microsoft were aware of the problem and after a month
issued a new version of the update. I'm wondering if
you perhaps have the old version. On my computer it cut
down my speed by about 40%. Took me 3 weeks to find the
problem. Uninstalled it hurrah, back to normal.
