While trying to Add a component to Text Services (Control Panel) I got the
following error: An exception has occurred while trying to run "shell32.dll,
Control_RunDLL "C:\windows\system32\INPUT98.cpl",Text Services
I can get to the same dialogue box through settings on the Language bar and
have been able to make the changes without a problem, however I would like
to rair this issue if possible.
Can anyone advise how to correct this please.

The System File Checker may be able to solve this: at Start > Run type
SFC /scannow
and press ENTER.

Thorsten thanks, I searched for this utility in accessories but could not
find it! The only problem I have now is that when I run the utility it
keeps asking me to load my WinXP Service Pack 1 CD which I do not have
because I would have loaded SP1 through Windows Update. Any suggestions
please?

Did you delete the SP1 files (folder WINDOWS\SERVICEPACKFILES) from
the HDD? If yes, you will have to re-apply the SP to restore this
folder. Else SFC should work when you insert the Windows-CD and ignore
the error messages.

My error! I installed it with the latest verison of XP from CD-ROM. Found a
knowledgebase article which highlighted the fact that the drive might have
changed from original install which of coure it had as I deleted a partition
just after installing it! A quick registry fix enabled me to run the
utility.

That aside, I have been able to run sfc however the problem persists.

Thanks for your assistance.

If you can run SFC now but get error messages along the way, ignore them as
Torgier suggests. When I ran SFC after installing SP1, I saw the same thing.
To resolve, I would point the tool alternately to the SP1 folder and back to
the WinXP CD until it found what it wanted and then continued.

In this case you may have to re-run Windows Setup to reinstall
Windows. See "How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of
Windows XP" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315341).
However, INPUT98.CPL is no standard Windows file so at first you may
want to find out where this file belongs to. Reinstalling the software
may also help you out.

Thanks to all for input. This is strange. Could it be that Text Services
(which is a standard part of the WinXP install) is from a third party
supplier? I have tried renaming it to input98.old but the Text Services
control panel item just does not appear. Ie its not regenerated
automatically.

If INPUT98.CPL is part of Windows you should be able to restore it
from the Windows-CD with MSCONFIG.EXE. However, I do not see the files
here in my machines.

Yes and no. I not founda reference to this file on a German site.
INPUT98.CPL indeed is part of Office XP and text
recognition/handwriting support. However, INPUT98.CPL is for Windows
98/ME systems. In Windows XP the INPUT.CPL is used. You may want to
replace the file.
