How do i disable the virus detector for downloading
upgrades?

Most antivirus programs can be temporarily disabled by doing a =
RIGHT-Click on their icon (in the System Notification area on the system =
toolbar). Then depending on which antivirus you have, you need to =
follow 1 or more selection.
With Norton/Symantec you can set to disable right from the notification =
area.

I have to follow-up & ask: what "upgrades" are you referring to?

Look in the tray notofication area next to the clock. There should be an
icon for your antivirus program there. Right click it and you'll probably
find an option to disable it. If not, then Start/Programs/ "Your Antivirus
Program and you will find an option to disable there.
