Hi there, my dad came back from Vacation and started up
his Computer...it took 10 mins for the Computer to get out
of the splash page on Windows XP Home Edition....is this a
Hardware or a Software problem?...thanks for your time!
(and it continues to take 5-8 mins to start up)

I'm having this same issue (upgraded from Win98). Would
love to hear suggestions.

your posts will not get a lot of direct and
objective answers - as they are too general
and not specific - thus pls read this and
repost w/more specific info - ie

http://www.dts-l.org/goodpost.htm

ie
startup pgm load
when did it last run ok
what have you done on it since
computer installed h/w and s/w
ie - h/w - proc speed/ram/hdd size/hdd used/free space/
etc
added h/w and or s/w
etc

It could be either hardware or software. Unless you can pinpoint what's
taking so long to start, what point in the process it's pausing, it's
impossible to say. What you've asked is equivalent to calling a car mechanic
and saying "My car is making a noise. Is that good or bad?"

Do a google search for a program called "Boot Vis" which i think is from
Microsoft. Run it and see what it comes up with. Also, use the "Optimize
System" which should cut down the boot up time significantly.

Good luck,
