Standby is not grayed out. I don't get a keyboard driver error message, and
I don't have Adobe Type Manager installed.

I can specify standby for my keyboard sleep button in Power Options and then
select sleep. I can select standby directly for the Turn Off Computer
popup. In both cases, nothing happens. The computer keeps running

Look in Event Viewer for an explanation of why the Standby command was
completed. Start> Run> eventvwr.msc
