Most of the programs in the Notification Area of the Taskbar will have their
own options for starting or not starting when XP boots. For the others, you
can select them the same way you did in Win ME. Open msconfig from the
Start/Run app and deselect the programs from the Start Up tab.

msconfig works fine for all but windows programs
(messenger, specifically). To disable it, go to
add/remove progs, on the left click on add/remove windows
components, uncheck msmesenger, and the finish. If you
just remove it from startup, it automatically starts when
you start outlook express. if you don't use express, you
should be able to do it the msconfig way.

I have no idea what all the fuss is about messenger. You
bone heads just don't know how to use it. I have it as an
icon on the tool bar at the top of IE6 only. It never
activates on startup or at any time unless I activate it.
I wish you people would stop your personal war on a good
utility that you simply don't know how to use. Uncheck
msmgs in the msconfig\startup and then when you do have
messenger activated in the messenger options uncheck
the "start at startup" box. It is as easy as all that.
Duhh. Good luck.
