I've just purchase WinXP Home Upgrade edition and when I
attempt to perform the upgrade from within my running
Win98 version the installation gets up to the "Preparing
Installation" point and fails with the following Fatal
Error:

Setup cannot continue. Contact Microsoft Technical
Support. (error 3E6h)

What can I do from this point? I haven't gotten to the
point where I get the Product ID number, so I can't call
MS Support (without spending my dime...).

Isn't the ID printed on the CD packaging so you can enter it during
installation?
