Can anyone please direct me to Microsoft instructions or a Knowledge base
article on Uninstalling Service Pack 1 for Windows XP.

I may be able to do this through the Add/Remove Program but I would prefer
to read about it before proceeding.

A drastic decrease of performance of my System coincided with the
installation of the Service Pack and I want to remove it to see if I will
regain my earlier speed

DO NOT uninstall SP1.

This speed slowdown is a known issue with XP with SP1 installed. There is a
patch available for this issue.

Please see here:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-013.asp

And then install this updated patch.

Here is some info on the actuall error itself:

In addition to what Bill mentioned you should also ensure that you do a
defrag after you update to SP1/SP1a as the upgrade will seriously fragment
the drive.

To answer you question about removing SP1 yes you can uninstall it through
Add and Remove Programs IF you archived your system when asked at the
beginning of the SP1 installation. If you did not save and archive then you
can run a Repair Install to remove SP1/SP1a. To run a Repair Install you
simply disable your Antivirus and pop the XP CD into the CD-Rom. Next click
Install->Upgrade[Recommended] and run the upgrade. This will not cause data
loss, program loss or changes in Settings however you will need to reinstall
Critical Updates and you will lose previously saved System Restore points.
