Spooler and RPC failure

Setup for a new HP LaserJet 2300dn does not complete.
Error messages state the Spooler SubSystem App needs to
close.

When the Found New h/w wizard picks it up, it soon
announces the RPC Server (which supports the Spooler) is
unavailable.

On the MS KB I found a procedure applicable when a third-
party program changes the default local port monitor. To
resolve this issue, I tried correcting the Local Port
value in the registry, as described in the KB article. No
success.

My aim is to install the printer with WiFi to a Gateway.
This was set up and working until I upgraded this week
from ME to XP Home. I have also tried as a first step to
install the printer as non-shared via LPT1. Same problem.

Thanks Cari. I tried the procedure, using safe mode,
regedit etc. It seems worded for another version than XP,
but there were in my case no entries that needed
deletion, except empty 2 and 3 folders.

I had earlier gone through the similar procedure on
http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/CleanPrinterDrivers.htm

What strikes me when I try to Add Printer connected at
LPT1 is that the abort message now refers to the RPC
service being unavailable. Simply restarting it and/or
the Spooler with Computer Management/Services and
Applications doesn't work.

Thanks Cari. It didn't work, and there was nothing much
to remove at those places in the registry. Earlier I
tried the same kind of thing from

(found on another posting).

The abort message when I try to connect to the parallel
port is that the RPC service is not available. Manually
re-starting it doesn't seem to last.
