View Full Version : two small annoyances ?

HI,
I am trying to emigrate to XP-Pro from 98se on my work
laptop.
I usually connect to my own network at home for 'homework'.
My network runs a 98se machine and a debian/95b machine.

Two annoyances I would like to investigate a fix for are:

#getting XP windows to remain in "detail" view within
WinExplorer - at least for the admin logon but preferably
for all users.

##the apparent "i know better" approach to creating LAN
connections in the XP Network Setup Wizard.
Is there an alternative method where one can select
protocols/services and importantly, assign addresses for
network connections?
I currently am on "lan connection 3" and cannot fathom where
(or how to get rid of) the previous setups,, LC1 And LC 2
are located!

In 98se you were able to ensure the LAN settings were
completely stripped by clearing settings in
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Net+s ervice+trans
is something similar provided for admin level in XPP?
Also is it possible in XP to use regedit to 'clean' the
registry as is done under '95 and '98 using
c:\regedit /l:path /r:path /c path_file
???

more questions :-)

Make your settings for one folder, then go to Tools > Folder Options >
View and press the "Apply to all Folders" button.

Highlight the LAN connection, press F2 and eliminate the "3" from the
name.
You can set up the network with the New Connection Wizard instead of
the Network Setup Wizard or simply use a Wizard and then adjust the
settings for the new connection in its Properties.

Use tools like the jv16 Power Tools
(http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/index.php) to clean the Registry, but use
them with care. To optimize the Registry you can use the NTOPTREG tool
that comes with EruNT
(http://home.t-online.de/home/lars.hederer/erunt/).
