Hi there,
Gigabyte Mainboard AMD K7 Thunderbird 1.3GHZ 512MB SDRam onboard USB 1.1
I' m wondering if there is something in XP that could prevent 3rd Party
Programs from detecting and using a USB scanner.

I' m on my 3rd brand new scanner (2 HP) with the 3rd one being a Canon
Lide20.

XP detects the scanner as a system device, the test button says its okay.
But when I go to the default scanner untility that comes with the scanner
(all 3 occurences) NO scanner is shown.

I entered REGEDIT to check check access permissions for all attempts, but
that had no effect.

I got a new Buslink USB 2.0 PCI card, that didn't help.

HP Support was completely baffled and could not assist, that is why I went
to Canon. Same result.

Any suggestions?

Thanks
Carl

I have been having a similar problem. I bought and installed a Belkin USB
2.0 PCI card on my P4 XP computer. Tried unsuccessfully to install and HP
4570 and a Canon 9900F. Neither scanner would run connected to this Belkin
card. Bought an Adaptec USB 2.0 card and the HP scanner is running
perfectly. Have already returned the Canon so I can't test it.

I was told that my Belkin card was OHCI compliant and I would need to
install one that was both OHCI and EHCI compliant. I don't claim to
understand the technology so I'm no help that way. In any case, the Adaptec
card has solved my issues! You might give it Adaptec a try???

Good Luck! BEK

If it works with the scanner and camera wizard on the Start Menu under
Accessories, the problem is with the bundled software you are trying to use.
Since it is new, I'd contact the manufacturer of the scanner as this is
their issue.

This link doesn't exist. How do I create it in this situation?
One thing, it did work at first then I unplugged the cable when done. When I
replugged to use again, gone, the ability to link my Twain source to the
default program or any other program.

I can't help you with the software for your scanner, that issue will have to
be resolved by the manufacturer. As to the Scanner and Camera Wizard:
If this is a relatively recent issue, you might try using System Restore to
take you back to a time when this worked properly. Start\All
Programs\Accessories\System Tools\System Restore. If that doesn't resolve
it, try the information below.

The following assumes you have an actual XP CD as opposed to a restore CD or
restore partition supplied by your PC manufacturer.

Go to Start, type sfc /scannow in the run box and press enter. Note, there
is a space between sfc and the forward slash. You will be asked for your XP
CD. Be aware, upon inserting the CD the XP setup screen may appear, this is
not a part of sfc /scannow, rather it is being invoked by autorun. Simply
minimize the screen and allow sfc to continue.

If the above fails to resolve the issue, try a repair install as follows:

Be sure you are well backed up in case there is a problem from which you are
unable to recover. NOTE, while a repair install should leave your data
files intact, if something goes wrong during the repair install, you may be
forced to start over and do a clean install of XP. If you don't have your
data backed up, you would lose your data should that eventuality occur.

Boot from the CD. If your system is set to be able to boot from the CD, it
should detect the disk and give a brief message, during the boot up, if you
wish to boot from the CD press any key.

Once you have pressed a key, setup should begin. You will see a reference
asking if you need to load special drivers and another notice that if you
wish to begin the ASR (Automatic Recovery Console) depress F2. Just let
setup run past all of that. It will continue to load files and drivers.

Then it will bring you to a screen. Eventually, you will come to a screen
with the option to (1) setup Windows or (2) Repair Windows Installation
using the Recovery console.

The first option, to setup Windows is the one you want and requires you to
press enter. When asked, press F8 to accept the end user agreement. Setup
will then search for previous versions of Windows. Upon finding your
version, it will ask if you wish to Repair your current installation or
install fresh. Press R, that will run a repair installation. From there
on, follow the screens.
