The firewall should protect you. There are better firewalls that will stop
both incoming and outgoing messages and they are free. Something else to
consider is connecting to the Internet through a router. That and the
firewall should keep the hackers out of your hair. Not impossible but it
will make it difficult.

All of the above have free versions that work very well and will alert you.

It's hard to say about the error but it might just be a reference to
something broken at some website you visited or to some weird active x
control that a site tried to install but failed because of your security
apps.
