View Full Version : Print Spooler

I am unable to install a printer and continue to get the
error message: RPC Server Unavailable. I have traced this
back to the fact that my print spooler is stopped. When I
try to start it up, I get the error message: Error 1068
Dependency Service or Group Failed to Start. I am running
Windows XP on a Dell Dimension 4550. Anyone know what may
be causing this or how to fix it? Thank you.

Ah, don't tell me, you have a Lexmark.

Disconnect the printer from the PC. Follow the instructions at Bruce
Sanderson's website and pay special attention to his section on Lexmark
printers.

http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/CleanPrinterDrivers.htm

At the end of the cleanup, reboot the PC. Download a new set of drivers
from www.lexmark.com (if you intend to reinstall the same or another
Lexmark) <at which point I run and hide> or from the other printer
manufacturer's website <at this point I'll cheer!>... install the software
and do NOT reconnect the printer until the software tells you to do so.

I have read all these posts (ok, I think I have
read "all")- and they never address the same problem if
one is NOT using a Lexmark. Obviously, I am curious since
I do not employ a Lexmark and my print spooler has begun
to fail, after running for two years w.o problems (the
only new printer added to the ten there was an HP 4000 on
the network).
thanks.

I often tell people how to unistall and reinstall a printer that is not a
Lexmark..... !

The problem with the Lexmark uninstall is that Lexmark install a Service
which often fails to uninstall correctly, therefore folks with the 1068
Dependency error, almost invariably have a Lexmark with this fault.

What are your symptoms with your print spooler.....?

Have you typed:

sfc /scannow

at the command prompt? which will check system files and restore them if
they have become corrupted? (sfc = system file checker)

I have run SFC twice. No files were changed, no files
corrupted (or at least no messages of same, nor a request
for the CD).

thanks.
