View Full Version : 64-bit?

I was looking for downloads on ms. up-date. My computer
is XP SP1 (of coarse or I wouldn't be here). I was
wondering what the 64-bit XP SP1 would be? Remember, I am
a "new user" so, I know to some of you this question may
sound .... well, you know what I mean.
What is the difference between them? Smaller computer?
maybe?
I know I've seen this on my computer somewhere. I
remember I have a 128 mg. and a 64 something. (I have a
laptop) Would this be the catacory I should download
from? I've been using XP SP1 but I have a feeling I've
been looking at the wrong up-dates.
If you don't know the answer please refrain from showing
your I.Q.
All other answers, thank you.

You have a 32-bit version of Windows XP. The 64-bit version
is only available if your running a high dollar Itanium processor.

You have a 32 bit computer (otherwise you wouldn't ask.)
Right click My Computer, click Properties.
It would say something like 64 bit Itanium (64 bit Windows only runs
on Intel Itanium processor)
Another way to tell is to use the automobile test.
If the car you drive costs more than your computer you have a 32 bit
computer
If the car you drive costs less than your computer you have a 64 bit
computer. They are very expensive.

Asking is a good way to learn. I got a tickle from Jupiter's answer to =
you.
I'll put it this way: If you bought Windows XP at regular retail =
outlet, or if you purchased your pc at some "normal-retail outlet" you =
have a 32-bit Windows XP & 32-bit machine.
The best way is for you to lookup the specific kind of micro-processor =
chip, and then do some research on it.
You need to find out whether you have an Intel, AMD, or other; and then =
the specific type!
64-bit processors go into super-charged systems so that they can do more =
and address more memory & do things much faster.
64-bit processors must reside on 64-bit system boards.
Just one example of a place for you to look: Go to START menu, then =
select RUN from there. Then type in=20
MSINFO32 <enter>
It takes a bit of time, but then you'll see some basic system =
information
Like this sample "snippet":
OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 1 Build 2600
OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation
System Name ** your system 'name' **
System Manufacturer __________
System Model Pentium _________
System Type X86-based PC
Processor x86 Family _____________
<end of snip>
Look for what your system "model" shows.
As to which updates from Windows Updates: Disregard the 64-bit =
designated items. Select the standard XP designated items.
btw, there are a few utilities that will show you which type/model =
processor you have.
Belarc Advisor is one of them. http://www.belarc.com

Not true, JJ. There are other 64-bit CPUs around (Xeon, Opteron) so you
really need to qualify that statement.

Greetings --
Actually, the Xeon is a hyperthreading 32-bit CPU (there are
Pentium III and Pentium 4 varieties) designed primarily for
dual-processor systems, not a 64-bit CPU.

The operating system is 32 bit though there is a version that is 64 bit.
Longhorn is supposed to be 64 bit but is still 32 bit in the alpha
stage.

Windows XP Home Edition (32-bit)
Windows XP 64-bit Edition (Intel Itanium 64-bit)
Windows XP Windows XP 64-Bit Edition Version 2003 (Intel Itanium II 64-bit)
Future versions of the client OS will be available in a similar fashion with
both 32 and 64 bit builds for various processors.
Your information about Windows "Longhorn" is incorrect.
