Are there any advantages to installing XP Professional
over the XP Home Edition that came with my PC? I have the
XP Professional from a second unit that went bad and
wonder if intalling the PROFESSIONAL verion over the Home
Edition is of any benefit?

Hi Bob,

You may not be able to do that if the Pro version came with the system that
died. OEM licenses usually are not transferable to another machine, nor do
they generally work as an upgrade to an existing system.

Differences between the two:

Greetings --

The two versions are identical, when it comes to stability,
functionality, and device driver and software application
compatibility, but are intended to meet different needs, in different
environments. One difference not usually mentioned is that WinXP Pro
allows up to 10 simultaneous inbound network connections, while WinXP
Home only allows a maximum of 5.

However, if your "XP Professional from a second unit that went
bad" is an OEM version, the question is moot. OEM licenses are
permanently bound to the first computer on which they're installed,
and are not transferable to another computer under any circumstances.
If it's a retail license, you can upgrade, is so desired.

The Home Edition is an OEM product and the XP
Professional was bought outright, but I had to call MS to
get the activation codes when I installed it the first
time on the other unit.

What I can not find in the Home Edition is 'backup'
capability under the 'system Tools', yet I can see this
feature on the XP Pro. Any Suggestions? Shoudl I jsut
install the XP PRO over the home edition?

I noted in the instrucitons on one of the sites you
directed me to
(www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_home_pro.asp)
that the backup utility was removed from the XP Home
edition; HOWEVER, the site goes on to state '...In a
somewhat controversial move, Microsoft has removed the
Backup utility from the default Windows XP Home Edition,
though it is available as an optional installation if you
can find it on the CD-ROM (hint: it's in the /valueadd
folder)....'. Where o where is this 'valueadd folder'
located....

YOU would not be advised to upgrade to PRO if you do not need the extra
security especially in a home environment.

They are nearly identical so save yourself the grief if you lose or mess up
your machine.
