My computer came with XP Home Edition in German. While in
the US I bought an upgrade to XP Pro in English as this
computer will now be used for business and all other
software is or will be in English. However, the setup
doesn't work and I get the message "The langiage of this
installation of Windows differs from the one you are
installing. The option to upgrade will not be available".

I did some research beforehand and found no indication
that that the same language was a system requirement.
Does anyone know of a solution or workaround?

One cannot change the language version of Windows XP.
You must purchase the "Full English Version" of Windows XP,
reformat your drive and install it "clean". The alternative is to
create a dual-boot configuration which requires an available,
empty partition. You can purchase and use Partition Magic 8
(www.powerquest.com) to accomplish this.

If you have a desktop computer, or a notebook computer that
will accept a second hard drive, you can install a second hard
drive and install the "Full English Version" on it and end up
with a dual language boot configuration.
