with Windows 98 installed, free memory on my c-drive was
4 Gigabytes
After installation of XP home, Free memory is 600MB
Is this a correct experience or has XP duplicated what
was there. The Hard disc is 9 giga total. I am now
severely handicapped without larger memory capability

Sounds about right to me, seeing as how you have upgraded, and not done a
clean install.

Most installs I have performed, use about 2.5-3 gig of drive space (NOT
MEMORY) for a complete install with 512 meg of RAM. That includes a 756 meg
pagefile and a 512 meg hibernation file. Add the leftover files/programs
that were NOT removed during the upgrade and it can really chew up the drive
space with crap that is not even compatible with Windows XP.

Note: A nine gig hard drive is way too small for Windows XP!
