View Full Version : Favicons in address bar--dragging to far right---why?

I was wondering why favicons will not display in WindowsXP Home Edition SP1
with IE 6.

The only way I can get them to display is to click on the generic Internet
Explorer icon immediately in front of the URL in the address bar and drag
this to the far right within the address bar a few times. This will often
work, but sometimes doesn't work for sites that I've visited previously.

Might the cache (temporary internet files) be at play here somehow?

Thank you.

The special icon downloads to the Temporary Internet Files and will be
displayed unless you empty the cache or until the file is normally cycled
out of TIF to make room for new files. You can grab the favorite icon file
out of the TIF folder. Rename it (so that one favicon.ico file doesn't
overwrite the other). Then toss it into a folder where you store files
permanently. Use the Properties>Shortcut> Change Icon of the internet
shortcut to assign the customized icon.

More tips on how to manage favicon.ico files can be found at MVP Kelly
