View Full Version : IE6 slow after XP update

Hi,
I have upgraded (complete install) to XP , (formatted
disk etc....) Install went great. Outlook express is good
as well. The issue is with IE6. When clicking on IE and
going to the default MSN web page , for example, the page
connects right up, but on the lower left, it hangs and
says "30 items remaining" which on broadband, should be
pretty fast...

I have done this for a friend and double checked his
connection modem etc...I am thinking there is a tweak I am
missing...But have loaded XP many times before and had no
issues...

Thanks!

Is this problem only with MSN's site?

No...Not just MSN...even yahoo..or Home banking site...

It starts loading.....just kinda hangs with
"xx items remaining"

He has an old machine, Compaq 500-600 Mhz 300+RAM...
I was thinkning too much for it but...

I have had XP loaded on my old laptop IMB thinkpad, 366,
128 RAM that I use on wireless network just to surf
outside and it works perfect...

I am diligently searching the web as well..

I appreciate your response.

Have you looked at the IE settings (Tools...Interent Options...Advanced) to
see if something is off that should be on? Is there Antivirus or Firewall
software that is not configured properly? Popup killers can cause
legitimate sites to act improperly as well.

Hi Scott,
I am going to have to look at that further. This
was a brand new install...nothing else loaded at
all..just the XP cd, configured Outlook Express and that
is it...

I was reading about java scripting being a possible
problem if not enabled...

hopefull I can get out work soon to work on it...I think
it is close...(praying....)

You haven't installed an Antivirus Software package or turned on the
Internet Connection Firewall yet? You need to do this ASAP, because the
computer is wide open to hacks and attacks if you don't.

Unfortunately no..

I couldn't get to the Mcafee page to download his
s/w...hence the problem..
I did send ad-ware, spy -bot via email, since that works..

But i would say right after i loaded XP, it would hang on
the web pages...i am talking 2 minutes after
install/activation etc complete...so I am confident there
was no major spyware that kept it from being slow, at that
point...

Kenny, before we talk about any issue, you've got to make sure you have all
SP's and patches installed. And you really need to turn on the ICF Firewall
(part of Windows) by right clicking the Internet connection and choosing
Properties and then the Advanced tab.

It appears that the problem is a faulty enet card/cable.
I connected the modem w/ the USB connection (Motorola
SB4220) and the connection is perfect.
