Hello,

I'm considering upgrading from Win98 to XP Home Edition, but I have a
question about this procedure.

When I upgraded from 95 to 98, at the same time I opted to format my hard
drive and install the Win98 upgrade to the clean drive. When, as expected,
it couldn't detect an existing copy of Win95 I inserted my Win95 CD and
pointed the installer program to that. This was accepted and the 98 upgrade
then proceeded to install without problems.

I'ts about time I reformatted my HD again, so I'd like to do both things at
once again. Does a (retail) XP upgrade CD allow the same procedure? And
would it matter that my 98 CD is itself an upgrade to Win95?

Any help appreciated...

Thanks

Stuart

Yes.

Greetings --

It is possible to perform a clean installation using an Upgrade
CD.

Simply boot from the WinXP Upgrade CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. The Upgrade CD checks to see if a qualifying OS
is installed, and, if it finds none, it asks you to insert the
installation media (CD) of that OS. Unfortunately, an OEM
"Recovery/Restore" CD will not work for this purpose; you must have a
true installation CD, complete with the Win98 folder and *.cab files.

Alternatively, or especially if all you have is an OEM Recovery CD
for the earlier OS, you can even start the upgrade from within the
current Win98/Me installation, and still elect to perform a clean
installation, to include formatting the drive. In this case, there's
no further request for the qualifying OS's installation CD, because
the installation routing "remembers" that you started from within the
qualifying OS. This process is more time-consuming, but you get the
same results: a clean installation of WinXP.

Yes it does

No it won't matter.

But read up first Gary Woodruff's page www.aumha.org/a/xpupgrad.htm and
also assess whether a machine that dates back to Win95 days is powerful
enough, and has enough RAM to be sensible for XP. Better stay with a
good 98 setup than an incapable XP one
