Have trouble opening 1998 MSPublisher data

I backed up all my data from 1998 Windows to a ZIP250
disk, to be installed after I got the Windows XP program.
Now I can not open MS Publisher and MS Word with XP.
Get message something like "Can not open older version..."
Drives me nuts!
