You don't format CDs for audio. You use software that works with your CD
Writer drive to create audio CDs. XP can do this as it has built in burning
software. However it is not the easiest software to use and has a number of
limitations. Check Alex Nichol's site for info about CD Burning in XP. I
have a link to his site from here
http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/cdr_info.htm

Most people find that it is easier to compile high quality audio CDs by
using a third party program like Nero from www.nero.com or Easy CD & DVD
Creator 6 from www.roxio.com or RecordNow Max from www.stompinc.com .These
applications really simplify the process by allow you to easily create a
play list, normalize the volume on all the tracks and can even enable you to
transfer music from cassettes or LPs to CD and create jewel cases.

If you don't want to purchase a third party app the free Sony CD Extreme app
that I have links to from here http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/cdr_info.htm
will also easily create audio CDs. But has no jewel case creator.

Whatever software you use always make certain that you use CD-R and not
CD-R/W when creating audio CDs. This is because most audio CD players can't
read CD-R/W disks.

Programs like "Roxio Easy CD Creator" come with a project selector than
makes things easy(ier). You throw in a blank CD, start up the project
selector and select "Make a music CD" or "Make a data CD" or whatever. Then
typically you just drag-n-drop files to create a list of what you want to
put on the CD. When you are happy you click the red "record" button to burn
the selected files onto the disc. They also come with a copy CD option if
that's of interest.
