Installation Problems

Has anybody come across this fatal error when upgrading
from Windows 98 to Windows XP Home Edition:

D:English\winxp\home\1386\ASMS. Error Message. The volume
for a file has been externally altered so that the opened
file is no longer valid

and

SXS.DLL: Syntax error in manifest or policy filed
d:english\winxp\home\1386\asms\1000
\msft\windows\gdlplus\gdlplus on line 4
