System Suddenly Slow

I do not believe anything new has been installed or changed. Recently, when
I attempt to use "Disc Cleanup" it will stall on "Compress Old Files". I
will click "Cancel", any attempts to restart "Disc Cleanup" fails and at
times the entire system slows. As I type this the cursor freezes
momentarily. Any suggestions?
