How do I stop this irritating window from appearing everytime I open MSN Messenger?

What is the difference between MSN Messenger and Microsoft Messenger?

Open MSN Messenger, then tools>options>general tab> uncheck: open messenger
main window when messenger starts.
MSN Messenger is Microsoft. If you are talking about Windows Messenger it is
the client messenger for windows operating system and is prone to pop-ups
and spam. Best to disable it and use MSN Messenger. Or you can remove
"Windows Messenger" by using the control panel for add & remove software.

Greetings Geoff,

You can simply remove MSN Today by opening up MSN Messenger, clicking the Tools menu, then
Options, click the General tab, uncheck 'Display MSN Today when Messenger signs in' and
click OK.

There is no such thing as "Microsoft Messenger", so I assume you mean Windows Messenger.
There are several differences between the two. Most notably, MSN Messenger 6 has support for
display pictures, custom emoticons, has a different interface, etc. whereas Windows Messenger
supports SIP-based communications services, Exchange IM Server, etc. Which one you use is up
to you, and a matter of personal choice (and based upon your needs and likes), however one
thing to keep in mind, Windows Messenger must still be installed on Windows XP in order for
MSN Messenger to retain full functionality (Remote Assistance, Whiteboard, Application
Sharing, etc.).

MSN Messenger is centered around MSN technologies (Hotmail, MSN Member Profiles, MSN Mobile,
etc.) whereas Windows Messenger is centered around Windows technologies (Exchange Server,
Office Live Communications Server, Windows Netmeeting, etc.).

Both clients however can make use of Microsoft technologies, like the .NET Messenger service,
..NET Passport and .NET Alerts.
