View Full Version : Does XP Have ScanDisk? Other Recommended XP Maintenance?

Hi all,

I'm used to running scandisk to check for disk errors under Windows ME. I
also have been used to using Norton's Disk Doctor for the same purpose. Is
there anything equivalent to use under Windows XP? Please let me know.

Also, are there any other regular hard disk or system maintenance things
that people recommend under XP?

Thanks very much for the input.

Hi Jason,
Windows XP contains an improved disk utility called Check
Disk, so ScanDisk is no longer necessary.
To start Check Disk
1. Open My Computer, right-click a drive, and then
click Properties.
2. On the Tools tab, under Error-checking, click
Check Now
When you run Chkdsk at the Recovery Console, some options
are not available.
The Chkdsk command used when you boot to the Recovery
Console is not the same as the one used within a full
Windows session. Only two switches are available for this
version:
.. /P Performs an exhaustive check of the current
disk.
.. /R Repairs damage on the current disk.
If your system is able to boot to Windows either normally
or in Safe Mode and you suspect that you have disk errors,
you should use the full Chkdsk command.

As for other Third Party products, well that's a matter of
choice. Nortons' is okay but others on this Newsgroup may
recommend something else.

Thanks for this tip.

When I right click on a drive, go to properties, go to Tools and then run an
error check, I get the message that I have to reboot before chkdsk can run a
check (this is after I've selected "fix errors automatically."). When I do a
cold boot, chkdsk then runs. When it's done, there's the message that I
should wait for the computer to reboot. But that never happens. I have to
hit the restart button on the front of my computer.

Is something wrong here? I've got a dual boot system with ME on the C drive
and XP on the E drive. Maybe that has something to do why it doesn't
automatically reboot or restart?

Please let me know your thoughts on this. Thanks very much.

Somehow I find it hard to accept that reverting from a GUI based tool to a
1980s style command line tool is an *improvement*, especially in a 21st
century operating system.

Really? My Check Disk has a GUI.
