I recently installed Windows XP home version and starting
getting these "Messenger Service" pop ups. How do I get
rid of 12 assorted ones every time I turn on the computer?
Thanks,
Susan

Windows Messenger - stopping spam and pop ups
The issue is that currently ANYONE can actually send you a message through
the .NET Messenger network without being on YOUR contact list!
You can change this so that people will have to add you to their contact
lists before they can send you a message (which will have the effect of
blocking these Spam messages in the future).
To Disable Messenger Spam - simply:
Open up the main Messenger window, click Tools, then Options, then the
Privacy tab, click All users and then click the Block >> button.
This way you can manually add who you want to receive messages from and
block all others.

Windows Messenger - Disabling
Go to the START menu, Select Run and type in services.msc and click OK.
Scroll down and find the Messenger service, select it, right click it and
choose properties.
Under Startup Type select Manual. (or Disabled)
Then click the Stop button.
Then click the Apply button.
Then click the OK button.

If you have AOL, you should contact AOL and/or get a 3rd party firewall.

Susan;
These ads are using Messenger Service.
Messenger Service is a valuable tool many use.
Like many tools, it can be exploited.

No need to pay for the fix.
For Messenger Service ads:
You need to install or enable a firewall:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=330904
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/communicate/stopspam.asp
Disabling Messenger Service can be a good idea, but it does not solve
the real problem.
The ads are not the real problem, the ads are only a symptom.
The real problem is open ports that allow unwanted traffic into the
computer.
Disabling Messenger does nothing for the open ports.
The firewall controls the traffic.

Internet Connection Firewall will not work if you have AOL.
AOL is not compatible with Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
(ICF)
If you have AOL, you should contact AOL and/or get a 3rd party
firewall.

Disable Messenger Service:
Start/Control Panel, click Administrative Tools, click Services.
Go down to "Messenger".
Right click "Messenger" and select Properties.
Then under Start-up select DISABLE
Click OK and follow prompts

Hmmm. It's working on my computer, with AOL. Perhaps you mean to say that
if you use AOL as your primary Internet connection, it won't work?
