I prefer to use hibernate over "standby" and shutting
down. Over the years, I've had a variety of issues with
systems not wanting to go into standby, or taking
themselves out without user intervention, usually due to a
bit of software/hardware that decides it doesn't want to
sleep. =) Anywho, hibernate essentially shuts down your
system but allows you to quickly get up and running (over
shutting down) and in the state that it was in when you
started hibernate (similar to standby). To me, that seems
to be the best, and avoids any standby issues that may
crop up.
It's really just personal preference though. =)
