I have an HP ScanJet Scanner, but the software that came
with it does not support Windows XP and we just got a new
computer with XP.
I went to HP's web site and downloaded a driver and in the
middle of installing it, it said that it was not
authorized by XP and it may cause my system to crash or
work improperly. But it did give me the choice to install
it anyway. Any suggestions here. I have searched MS's web
site for an hour and cannot find a driver update for this
scanner.
Will it be ok to install or not. I don't want to screw up
a new system.
Thanks

Hi
Have you tried Windows Update? Don't install that driver, but reboot =
and let Windows try and detect your scanner - then try Windows Update.

Will, thanks for responding, I have not tried that yet,
but I do not have this new system connected to our network
or internet yet. I just got it and was loading all the
programs that we will need on it and that is when I came
across the problem. I guess I'll have to wait.
Thanks

The message means that HP did not submit the Windows XP driver/software for
your scanner to Microsoft for testing. I have noticed that HP frequently
does not submit updates for older hardware to Microsoft for testing. If the
driver for your scanner that you downloaded from HP is labeled by HP as for
Windows XP, I would ignore the warning message and install. I have done so
for a HP 6300 with no problems. Just be sure that the driver is for your
scanner and HP has labeled it for Windows XP.
You can always uninstall the driver. Also, suggest you consider a image
program such as PowerQuest Drive Image or Norton Ghost for protection. You
say it is a new computer. You should have received directions for how to
restore to an as delivered condition.
