Why not go and get a real copy instead of trying to break the law by what
you are doing ? Most likely an OEM version will not work anyway unless you
have the same brand and setup computer.

You can't use an OEM on a different machine than it shipped with. If you
got it from a friend, then it will only work on his/her machine.

Hi, Windows Media Center is not sold as an OEM product by itself. It is
*only* sold by OEM's including the new PC.

Try it. If your activation doesn't go through over the net, the format the
drive, and go back to what you got now.

I gave a totally truthful answer to his question. What he does with the
software, would be his problem, not mine.
"Oh, and to all the silly terrorists out there, the secret formula for
making an A-Bomb is E=MC²." Does it mean that I'm dishonest about the
secret formula for the A-Bomb, if a "silly terrorist" ever manages to

The dishonesty lies with giving someone a method to cheat someone else, it
is nothing to do with giving the wrong formula for an atom bomb.
Does the vitriol get generated automatically on a Linux OS?

Sue me! I answered truthfully, and kept my moral judgments about what the
OP wants to do to myself. It would be "dishonest" of me to answer in any
other manner.
If you asked me, "how do I commit suicide," and I answered you by telling
you that you're a sinner and you're going to hell, now that would be
dishonest, because that would not be answering your question, it would only
be me expressing my personal opinion about your wanting to commit suicide.
My honest answer would be to tell you to get naked, smear your body with
honey, and then go lie down next to a red ant hill.

Nope, only the dishonesty of those that rather answer a person's question
with nothing but their own personal moral judgment, rather than giving a
direct & truthful answer.

The best way to not feed a troll is to totally ignore them, and any mention

Why should we pay for a 2nd copy if the same user wants to use it on 2
computers. Do you have 2 copies of each audio cd so you are able to play in
more than one player?
I am not being a smartass but what is the difference between software and
audio CD's (from a moral point of view). Why should anyone feel guilty about
using some sort of crack.

Greetings --
Can you play that one audio CD in two stereos simultaneously? No,
of course not. You have to remove it from one to play it in the
second. Same for WinXP: remove it from the first computer, and you
can install it on the second. But that's as far as the analogy goes,
as music and software are two very different types of intellectual
property, and different rules apply to each.

If you make a copy of the original copy, you can both the original & the
copy simultaneously. And there is no copyright law that prohibits making
and using copies of music CDs you have purchased.

LOL! Actually the answer can very well be yes, dependin on if your an
effin' moron or not.

That ain't what copyright law says, and you know it. That would be MS's
legally unproven rules.

Aren't you the guy that posted over & over again for the past couple of
years that installing XP on more than one computer was not in compliance
with copyright laws, and only recently stop posting it because you were
finally shamed into changing your tune when you couldn't come up with one
copyright law to back up your nonsense? Who, in their right mind, would
believe a word you said that had anything to do with copyrights?

Do you have to buy 2 copies of a book in order to read it with both of your
eyes?

Well, the OP isn't trying to install his copy software on another of his
computers, he is trying to use somebody else's copy, and that is copyright
infringement, though in any market that has real competition, this kind of
infringement only tends to drive sales of the copyrighted product, through
word of mouth advertising. Hell, keeping a blind eye to this kind of
copyright infringement, what MS calls casual copying, or the sharing of
copyrighted material between individual human beings, helped MS build their
OS monopoly to begin with.

By installing his friend's copy of XPMC, that would technically be copyright

What makes you think OP is in the US? And exactly which law are you
referring to?
Anyway, I'm interested in, but not really excited about, XPMC. It looks
like you can't just get it for a regular machine.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/mediacenter/evaluation/hardware.asp
And apparently, you're not allowed to put together your own box. We'll
see how it goes a few months form now.
But if I had I copy now, I'd experimentally try to install it to see
what it was about. (If you have the space, etc., you can have more than
one OS on a single machine.) If it doesn't install, it's not going to
destroy anything.
It's just a version of XP. My guess is that it may run a while, maybe
three days, before needing activation.

It really doesn't matter where the OP lives to me. I live in the US, so I
talk about the laws I know.
> And exactly which law are you
> referring to?
Why Copyright law, of course.
"Anyone who violates any of the exclusive rights of the copyright owner as
provided by sections 106 through 121 or of the author as provided in section
106A(a), or who imports copies or phonorecords into the United States in
violation of section 602, is an infringer of the copyright or right of the
author, as the case may be." -
http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/17/501.html
"[T]he owner of copyright under this title has the exclusive rights to do
and to authorize any of the following . . . . to distribute copies or
phonorecords of the copyrighted work to the public by sale or other transfer
of ownership, or by rental, lease, or lending." -
http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/17/106.html
I did get it a little backwards though, the act of infringement has
allegedly already taken place when the copy of copyrighted material, XPMC,
was transfer from the the OP's friend to the OP, not once the OP installs
it.

Well since XPMC has already been out for quite a while, long enough to be
out in a second edition, I doubt MS is gonna loosen up much. MS's retail
sales are really not all that much when compared to what their OEM licences
pull in.
And I have had my computer setup as a media center for years, and I don't
even run XP.

30 days is more like it from a clean install, three days only if your
working off an disk image of XPMC. It's a little known secret that OEM XP
that is BIOS-locked by the OEM, will activate over the internet when you
install it on another computer.

What makes you think OP is in the US? And exactly which law are you

Anyway, I'm interested in, but not really excited about, XPMC. It looks

You mean the company that goes after a kid's web domain for trademark

in his spare time somewhere is the backwoods of Canada?
You mean the company that said,"So?" when it was told that is was a

Exactly what are you claiming is illegal? If you are talking about the
guy who gave the OP his copy, then that is probably infringement on the
part of the OP's friend, presuming of course that the guy is innocent
until proven guilty by the preponderance of the evidence. However, it
is legally questionable whether the OP using this allegedly infringing
transfered software is also an infringement under the law.
Even the Music Industry, with their P2P supenas, tried to only go after

Why Copyright law, of course.
"Anyone who violates any of the exclusive rights of the copyright owner as
provided by sections 106 through 121 or of the author as provided in section
106A(a), or who imports copies or phonorecords into the United States in
violation of section 602, is an infringer of the copyright or right of the

phonorecords of the copyrighted work to the public by sale or other transfer
of ownership, or by rental, lease, or lending." -

I did get it a little backwards though, the act of infringement has

Well since XPMC has already been out for quite a while, long enough to be

30 days is more like it from a clean install, three days only if your

You mean the company that goes after a kid's web domain for trademark
infringement, when the kid is just doing some part-time web page design
in his spare time somewhere is the backwoods of Canada?
You mean the company that said,"So?" when it was told that is was a
illegal predatory monopoly by the Federal Courts?
You mean the company that's been losing & settling patent infringement
case against them, at a record pace lately?
Oh yeah, like I'd believe MS's legal interpretations about anything!
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Its a free country so you can say what you want. The fact is its still
illegal.
If you are such a MS-Hater as seen in your rag-tag web page, then why are
you using the latest edition of IE and OE 6 to write with ? I am sure you
could find a Linux replacement.

Always good to welcome another MS apologist to this forum. Welcome
Tedd! Enjoy it...... You're now in a unique group along with
"Uncle Bruce" and Carey.
Perhaps you should go to Kurt's web site and learn something?
Regards.

Even the Music Industry, with their P2P supenas, tried to only go after
those that were sharing [or uploading music] to others.

That would be your opinion, I don't waste time with hating things, as
hate is a totally unproductive emotion. I like to think of myself as
more a consumer advocate, rather than a MicroAnything.

Is that really any of your business?

In 5 to 10 years, maybe.
"I mean it's going to take, literally five to 10 years before "normal
users" start seeing Linux desktop, but in the technical space it's doing
pretty well, especially in companies that can support it already." -

Until then, I'm just another victim of MS's predatory monopolistic
practices.
