Go to Control Panel-Sounds and audio devices- Select place volume icon on
the
taskbar
or you can also go to start-run-sndvol32.exe
this should bring up the volume control tool.

My volume icon disappears fairly regularly, and I find that I have to go in
to Control Panel, deselect it, close, reopen and re-select it. Dunno why,
but that usually fixes it. I have it set in Toolbar options to "always
show," but it likes to disappear anyway.

Disappearing Taskbar icons is a "known" bug in XP.
There are several options about a fix/workaround.
Sometimes, de-selecting Auto-Logon (TweakUI) will
resolve it. Other times it is attributed to certain services
running. If you do a "Google" on Taskbar icons you
will find numerous websites with info on the problem.
