Am I right in thinking that I should go to Windows Update and download all
Critical Updates for my new laptop that I had for Christmas. Have had so
many problems up to now, I didn't want to make anything worse.

Take all critical updates. Start with SP1a, if you don't have it. That will
include many of the others. Run the update scan again and download all the
others for critical updates. The recommended updates include WMP, DX9, etc.,
take those, the rest you will have to sort through to suit your needs.
