Strange Behavior

Hello all, I have a perplexing problem.
It started a few days ago. I keep shortcuts to both of my
optical drives on my desktop. All of a sudden they stoped
working.
Now, when I tried to use the Add/Remove programs, double
clicking on the icon does nothing.
Now I right clicked on My Computer to see my Hardware
settings and I just recieved this message:
The Application failed to initialize properly
(0xc0000005).
Does anyone know what is happening to my computer?

It's a side effect from one of the updates. Noticed a post in the
newsgroups over the weekend that the fix for it is already in the works.
