The referenced site gives a lucid account but insists that
you have a clean, formatted disk to start. I recently ran up
against the problem and could not figure out how to format
the disk or run Fdisk from the XP CD. The CD boots directly
to the Install routine and does not enquire whether you want
to format the drive partition. So, Question: how does one
reformat or repartition the boot (C:\) drive without 3rd
party programs?

Hi RS,
You do not need Fdisk or any other program the install disk has all the
tools needed.
Just boot from the install cd. The install will format and partition as
needed. Just follow the screens ( Carefully ) they are rather criptic but it
works.

Well, perhaps I should clarify: mine is an upgrade disk. No
such options are presented. One can install clean from the
upgrade disk by presenting evidence (such as a Win 98 disk)
that a previous version is owned. This covers instances
where the originally upgraded installation c:/ drive has
failed and a new one is installed. In my particular case I
felt that the hard drive had become incurably screwed up and
a clean installation would have been beneficial. So I didn't
want an upgrade installation, rather one from scratch. So
wiping the hard drive prior to installation seemed like a
good idea.

Greetings --
Is English a second or third language for you? If so, may I
suggest that you try posting your question in a news group dedicated
to your native language? I say this not to insult or offend, but
rather to point out that you're not likely to get much help, if no one
can understand what you're saying.
Otherwise, I'd suggest you try reposting in standard English,
complete with paragraphs, sentences, capital letters where
appropriate, and punctuation. As it is, your post is almost
completely undecipherable: the some of the words used are from the
English language, but are almost completely meaningless as currently
assembled.
Also, please unstick your CapsLock key. Posting in all caps, as
you have done, is the Usenet equivalent of shouting, and is considered
very rude by many people. More importantly, posting in all caps makes
the post very hard to read, severely reducing your chances of getting
help.
I've had to take a wild guess at what you're asking, so this may
not apply:
Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the
order of boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

Greetings --
It is possible to perform a clean installation using an Upgrade
CD.
Simply boot from the WinXP Upgrade CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. The Upgrade CD checks to see if a qualifying OS
is installed, and, if it finds none, it asks you to insert the
installation media (CD) of that OS. Unfortunately, an OEM
"Recovery/Restore" CD will not work for this purpose; you must have a
true installation CD, complete with the "\Win98" folder and *.cab
files, or the "\i386" folder of WinNT/2K.
Alternatively, or especially if all you have is an OEM Recovery CD
for the earlier OS, you can even start the upgrade from within the
current Win98/Me/NT/2K installation, and still elect to perform a
clean installation, to include formatting the drive. In this case,
there's no further request for the qualifying OS's installation CD,
because the installation routing "remembers" that you started from
within the qualifying OS. This process is more time-consuming, but
you get the same results: a clean installation of WinXP.

Bruce,
Not to beat a dead horse, but, as I said, the upgrade disk
did not allow me to opt for formatting. I could not run it
from within the existing xp installation because that
installation was broken. Apparently the install program saw
the magic xp files on the hard drive and proceeded directly
into "upgrade" mode. Had I a way to reformat the drive in
advance, I'd have done it.

Then you're doing something wrong, or can't read the
prompts. Either way, pay a professional to do that which
you can't!

I studied english very hard since an early age. I think I've
got it down pat. Before I back out of this degenerative
discussion, I will reiterate: My disk does not offer
options. It goes immediately into upgrade mode. I have
installed, repaired and upgraded XP a number of times. I
know how it's *supposed* to work. It didn't this time. I
don't know why, which is why I asked. Evidently no one here
knows, either.

You will have the option to delete the XP partition, then it will ask you
what size and file system to format the partition in.
You boot from the CD and do a clean install.
