Cant get and .exe files to work

I am a new user to Windows XP, and i have problems with
opening any .exe file.

It says "Windows cannot open this file"

It then ask me if i want to use the web service to find
the appropiate program or select the prgrame from a list.

if i try to look for it on the net, the page is never
found, and when i look for it in a programe list, it
doesn't work no matter what one i choose.

Please help!!!

An .exe file is a self executing application/program and does not need another program to activate. If your .exe file is corrupt or leads to another shared program it cannot find it will not activate. Another possibility is that the program is not compat
ible with WindowsXP. Use the compatibility feature to check it out.
Start/All Programs/Accessories/Program Compatibility Wizard.
