Folders acting strange

[XP doofus]

Greetings!

I have a Win XP Pro laptop I bought new.

Sicne I have had the computer, whenever I am in Windows
Explorer, when I double-click a folder in the right pane
to see its contents, it insteads opens the Search
function inteh left pane (the same thing, I have
discovered, as pressing the F3 button).

Any ideas on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.
