I mean, why? Why are Microsoft so crap? I'm trying to use 'remote
assistance' function, but I get 'you are using an older version (.207)
than the person you're trying to connect with (.208) - so click here and
go to the update site.'

When I click the link I'm sent to the Messenger 4.7 site! So when I go
to the messenger 6.1 site (which is weirdly hard to find, you'd think
microsoft.com/[a microsoft product] would take you there, but oh no.

So, when on the 6.1 site, nowhere does it tell me the full version
number e.g. 6.1.xxx. So I downloaded the installer - another 5MB
download which turned out to be the same version!

Am I mad or are Microsoft deliberately being dumb?

It's an absolute no-brainer to have an automatic upgrade feature built
into the thing.

It's insane not to remove previous versions (or even give the option).

I could go on, but I'm losing the will to live.

And another thing - messenger Windows XP - Mac? audio? Video? I think not.

Greetings,

Actually what it said is that you don't have the latest version of *Windows Messenger*. MSN
Messenger is a completely different product then Windows Messenger and if you remove Windows
Messenger (which I assume you have), you won't be able to use Windows' features like Remote
Assistance, Whiteboard and Application Sharing in MSN Messenger 6.x

Instead, you will need to install Windows Messenger (4.x or 5.x -- 4.7 is the one on the main
website as you noticed) in order to use Remote Assistance:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/messenger/download.asp

Also, this is no such version as 6.1.0208, so I'm unsure where you got that. As for
interoptability with Mac, this table my assist you in finding software that will work on both
platforms:
