View Full Version : Speed of XP search

Here's a little more data on our problem.
We are searching a 16GB, NT 4.0 drive.
When we search for any filename that contain the string 252* from an NT 4.0
machine, it is able to complete this search in approximately 15 seconds.
When performing this search on a Windows 2000 machine, the search takes
three minutes. The same search on XP takes nearly six minutes. All network
connections are identical, so it is the OS that is causing this slowdown.
I installed AgentRansack as suggested and it brings my search time on XP
down to three minutes, but this is still way too slow when compared to the
15 seconds required on NT 4.0. Could this have something to do with the fact
that the search function in XP is designed with Active Directory in mind? I
cannot understand why this new OS would be 24x slower than NT 4.0 with
regards to searching.
Any other ideas or thoughts would be much appreciated.

do you have the "Q811493" hotfix installed? if so, this is known to cause
performance issues with xp. ms is working to update this hotfix, but for now
you should remove it. see this article:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/bulletin/ms03-013.asp.
when available, the updated hotfix will be linked to this page.
