Okay, my sis-in-law did this: rt clk desktop, clk
properties, clk settings, adjust pixels to 1280x1024,
apply - black screen. I don't know if she indicated that
she wanted to keep the changes or not. She's a very new
computer user. Anyway, now she gets a dialog box that
says: "Out of Range" and the screen stays black no matter
what is done. It's really difficult to do anything on a
black screen, such as troubleshooting. Any suggestions
on how to get the black outta the screen and back to
normal?

It means she set the resolution beyond the capability of her monitor. Have
her boot to safe mode and reduce the screen resolution. Boot the system,
start tapping F8, when the menu appears, select Safe Mode and press enter.
At Safe Mode, either use the System Restore option to take the system back
to a time before the change or go into Display in Control Panel and reduce
the screen resolution manually to where it was prior to the change.
