I have a copy of XP Professional that I am relatively
sure is un-registered. I would like to know if there is
any way I can verify that it has not been registered
apart from registering it myself. Any help would be
appreciated.

Tim;
No, the way to fine out if it is Activated is to attempt Activation.
The source should be able to answer that question.
Do you have the original CD?
Do you have the original Certificate of Authenticity?
Do you have the original Product Key?
If no to any of the above, you may not have a legal license.

Hi, Tim.

"Register" refers to a user and is purely voluntary. "Activate" refers to a
copy of WinXP and is mandatory. I think you are asking about activation,
not registration.

For an official explanation of activation, see this web page:
Microsoft Product Activation
