I want to delete a registry so that I can install Windows XP from scratch
without formatting anything.

How should I do this?

Hi,

Do a repair installation, there is no need to delete anything. Follow these
steps to do a repair install which should preserve your data, settings, and
programs:

1. Insert the Windows XP CD into your computer's CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM
drive.
2. Restart your computer. If you have to, change the BIOS settings to start
from
the CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer again.
3. At the "Welcome to Setup" page, press ENTER.
4. Press F8 to accept the Licensing Agreement.
5. Use the arrow keys to select the installation of Windows XP that you want
to
repair, and then press R to start the automatic repair process.
6. When Setup is completed, activate Windows XP.

Note that you will need your Product Key for this procedure, so have it
handy before you begin.

There's no way to do this. You have two choices:

1) Do a repair installation.

2) Reformat and reinstall cleanly.

You have two choices: get a clean new install and have to reinstall all
programs (in which case back up your data first, and read Gary
Woodruff's article on Files and settings Transfer at
http://aumha.org/win5/a/fast.htm) or to do a repair install, where you
replace the system files and retain installed programs data and
settings. There is no sensible course in between, and if you try you
will just get things fouled up

I've taken my time to come to that same conclusion. Thanks.

I got much further by using my Windows XP Pro CD instead of my Mom's. But I
will need to know how to activate.

Background:
When my mother's computer got a corrupt Outlook, we decided to upgrade her
Windows. I first copied her C: to D:, and then I installed XP on C:. This
worked fine. I also installed it to D:, found that it worked - kind of - but
pointed to stuff on C:. I told myself I would either delete D: or fix it, but
never got around to either.

A year later, my Mother turned on her computer, and it started booting but got
an 0000051 registry error and produced a dump. I went through procedures to
get an older registry but nothing worked. I tried to boot to D: and that DID
work, but she doesn't have virus protection there, her Outlook won't load
correctly, her OE can read but not otherwise access her addresses (and aborts
when closed), and we can't install anything new. I tried to figure out how to
change its registry to point to D:, but failed.

I booted to her CD and tried various ways (fix and install) to install Windows
to C:. Whenever it checked to see if an earlier version of Windows existed, it
got the 000051 registry abort and dump. I never got to the format menu. I
booted to D: and tried to install to C:. Same thing.

Yesterday I took my CD over and booted to it. I was able to get past the
problem with her CD. My CD is older than hers. I selected the Repair
install, and had to press OK a bunch of times while it was trying to register
stuff "UNREGMP2.EXE - ENTRY POINT NOT FOUND: The procedure entry point GETIUMS
could not be located in the dynamic link library MSDART.DLL. I finished the
installation and it came up with the desktop that used to be on D:, not the
desktop that used to be on C:. I renamed the D: menu selection back to Old,
and it now says:
[boot loader]
timeout=5
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Old Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional"
/fastdetect
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons
Now, Outlook still wants me to set up MAIL from the control panel (Mail and Fax
looks good to me there), and won't open into anything except what looks like the
Windows Explorer. But Outlook Express is working correctly. I can install
software, but every time I try to install Norton AntiVirus, it almost completes
before rolling back. I need to run Spybot, as there is a spyware, but I ran
out of time and went home.

The odd thing is that when I try to boot to D:, I get the 000051 registry abort
and dump. Weird.

I did not activate Windows, as I need to find out how to contact MicroSoft to
figure out how to handle the fact that her CD didn't install correctly so I had
to use my CD and code.

I suppose I should install with a format of C: first, now that I can install at
all. Maybe that will clear out the last problems for C:.

Also - where are the dumps so that I can delete them?

If you just repaired it *may* still be activated. Go to Start - All
Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Activate Windows.

If it does not say 'already activated' take the option to activate by
phone. Before actually doing so, there is a chance to change the
Product Key: use it to change to the one originally belonging to the
machine. Accept, then exit without actually phoning; get on the net and
run it again and it should activate on the net in seconds

That's interesting. I will try putting her code in and see if that works
if that window comes up. I don't remember, does the phone number get
listed too?

It's given to you when you use the activate by phone method.

I just used my CD to install Windows to D:, (I did a format/install to make sure
to have everything clean) after trying and failing to do so with hers. I did
the registration that was part of the install, and I didn't come across an
option to activate by phone.

That took all evening, so the next time I'm there, I will boot to C: and start
activation to get the phone number. I plan on killing that activation as I
don't plan on keeping that Windows installation.

Then I plan on getting her necessary applications to D:, and install cleanly to
C:.

The first thing I do whenever I install a 2nd Windows to a system is rename the
Windows Boot name in the WIN.INI file. For some reason XP doesn't keep my old
names, and ends up with the same name for C: and for D:, which doesn't make for
a good menu.
