How do I format my drive which has XP Pro on it, back so that I can re-install win98? The XP CD lets me format the drive, but then goes right to installing a fresh copy of XP

Lets see if I can answer your question without being a smart ass ;-)
1) Boot with the XP CD and select the option to Repair with the Recovery
Console - if you read the License Agreement you've gone too far.
2) The Recovery Console will give you a list of commands you can use one
being the FORMAT command
3) At the command prompt type and then press the Enter Key for the format
type you want. Substitute "C" for your partition letter if it is different.
for NTFS use the following
FORMAT C: /FS:NTFS
for FAT use the following
FORMAT C: /FS:FAT32
when the format is finished remove the XP CD and type EXIT to reboot your
system.
