View Full Version : Restoring from 98 to XP

I always back up my most critical data and did so in
Windows 98 before getting my upgraded computer, running
Windows XP Home.

Since then I have been tearing my hair out as I did not
belive that Microsoft would not make XP compatible with
previous software - THERE IS NO WAY I CAN FIND TO RESTORE
MY FILES!

I have searched the Microsoft site and tried anything
that was suggested - nothing works (for me). I have
surfed the Net also to no avail. Five days later and I
still can not get operational!

If Microsoft can't help, can anyone else solve what
should logically have been solved before the issue of
Windows XP Home. How do I get my files back onto my new
maching running Windows XP Home? Or do I just go back to
Windows 98 and hope that the backup problem will be
solved... sometime??

Alistair,
You will good responses here. Just calm down & explain your setup & =
your needs "clearly".

#1. If you have "backup" files made by another version of Windows, it =
can only be restored / used by the same version of Windows-----except it =
is possible to use a 3rd party program like BackupMy PC from Stompinc.=20

#2. Do you have 2 separate pc's / or 2 separate partitions for old =
Win98 & new XP Home? or is it just 1 pc that was upgraded??

#3. XP has a built in Files and Settings Transfer Wizard which will help =
transfer data & programs from 1 setup to another.

These are some ideas. But you need to post back details.

Greetings --

If you've used Win9x's native backup utility to create *.qic
files, I'm afraid you'll need to restore those files on a Win98
machine prior to transfer to the WinXP machine. As they've always
been since the days of Win95 and WinNT, the two back up file formats
are completely incompatible. Another possible solution would be to
purchase a 3rd party backup utility that can read and convert the *qic
file format; I've heard that Veritas makes such a product.

Remember, WinXP is descended from WinNT and Win2K, and it
completely unrelated to Win9x/Me. How could anyone reasonably expect
WinXP to be fully backwards-compatible with a completely different
class of operating system, based upon an entirely different kernel?

Did you use Win98's MS Backup to make these archives? If yes, then that
is why you are having a problem. Historically, even new versions of MS
Backup are not compatible with old versions. XP uses NT Backup which is
also not compatible.

You have some options though...
-- Restore the backup on the Win98 machine. Use a different method to
transfer those files over to the XP machine.

-- Install a backup program on the XP machine that can read the Win98
backup files. "Back Up My PC" available at www.stompinc.com is a program
that can do this for you.
