Dual email use problem

[nedjm]

Have set up laptop for my 2 children.
Win XP home edition.
IE6 and OE6.
Both with same ISP but using different
access numbers.
Individual access to internet ok..
Email downloads for the one whose
name is shown as default in OE-tools-accounts-mail.
Switch default to other and its mail downloads.
How can his switching be eliminated?
Appreciate help.

Make sure that both OE installations use the same Store Folder. You
can adjust the setting in Tools > Options > Maintenance > Store
Folder. You cannot run OE with the Fast User Switching feature if you
do this, of course.

have you set up two different Users? If you have then the instances of
OE will be completely different, with different folder locations and you
can set completely different settings for each one.

Two different names,passwords and access numbers.
Same isp, earthlink.
The problem is that whichever account name
(tools, accounts) is set as default, that persons
mail downloads even when I access using the other
account name. Perhaps if default can be eliminated ????

This happens when the two accounts are actually aliases for the same mailbox
on the server. The only way to handle it is with Message Rules.

No it's not. I use Freeserve which uses aliases in the UK and there is a
way of doing it without using rules.
Suppose you have a main email account of xxyy.fr--s--ve.com
Then you have two email addresses of and
.

In the mail settings for each account, for the username, (which normally
would be xxyy.freeserve.com) type in "fred+xxyy.freeserve.com" and in
the other "jim+xxyy.freeserve.com" (Without the quotes). What that means
is that Fred only downloads email addressed to Fred and Jim only
downloads email addressed to Jim. The only drawback is that no-one
downloads email addressed to . But that
is usually spam anyway, and you can then use something like mailwasher
periodically just to delete it all.

There is no perfect set of rules, but you can get a fairly good
approximation. First you have to decide which user is the administrative
user. We'll call that one User A and the other User B.

For User B, first go to Tools | Accounts and double click the account. On
the Advanced tab check the option to Leave a copy on the server and to
Delete messages after 5 days. Change 5 to a number of days that you are
SURE will have had User A downloading messages. Then make this Message
Rule:

Where To or CC does not contain [User B]
Do not download from server.

The Not becomes available if you click Options after putting in the name.
If user B also has other rules, put that rule at the top and add "Stop
processing more rules" to the rule.

For User A you need two Rules. First, create a mail folder named Examine or
something for mail that doesn't fit the first rule. Then set User A's
account to leave mail on the server for a number of days that you are SURE
will have had User B downloading messages. The first (top) rule will be
this:

Where To or CC contains [User A]
Stop processing more rules

The second will be:

For all messages
Move to Examine, or whatever you named the folder.

After you have entered the rules they will all start with

Apply this rule after the message arrives

Mail that had User A or User B in the BCC field will end up in User A's
Examine folder along with a lot of the spam.

As I indicated, these rules are not perfect, but they are the best I could
do when my wife and I had aliases for the same account. I eventually got
her an entirely separate account with the ISP.

her an entirely separate account with the ISP.

Let me clarify.
Each of my daughters has her own account with earthlink.
One resides in San Diego, the other in Los Angeles.
They take turns coming to take care of me.
So I setup a laptop for their use.
I put in the data and each can access the internet
using their own account and a local access number.
Activating OE will only download mail for whomever
is shown as "default".
I have my own desktop located in my bedroom
and I use satellite for internet access.
