having a problem with my laptop ( Compaq Armada E500
running xp home and system commander) cannot boot to
either xp or milenium - get msg that says windows boot
system \system 32 \hal.dll is missing - downloaded a
copy of systen 32\hal.dll to a floppy but the file
wouldn't load - SO I would like to transfer the contents
of my laptop hard drive to my desktop 'puter (HP pavilion
running xp prof) - wipe the drive on the laptop and
reinstall xp then transfer the files back from the
desktop 'puter... problem is I DON'T know how to
accomplish this... HELP PLEASE....

A fast way is to go into dos type sys c: if me is on the c: drive. This
will at least allow you to get into windows me (you will not be able to get
into windows xp because the dual bootup will be destroyed) and then you can
burn the necessary files to a CD.

P.S. If your files in XP are NTFS you will not be able to see them from
Windows ME. Also I am assuming you had a burner if not you can use your USB
connection to transfer files or you can buy a $40 USB pocket flash memory
which is great for transferring information between computers.
