View Full Version : Limited account user cannot use scanner
Wilfred

I installed an scanner on my Windows XP Pro PC. When a "limited account"
user logs on to the computer, he is unable to use the scanner. Windows
returns a message that says "Scanner cannot be initialized. Scanner read
error".
If I change the user's account type, the scanner works fine. I tried
installing the scanner software twice, once for my user account, and a
second time under the second user account. As long as both users are
"computer administrators", everything works fine. When I change the second
user to "limited account", the scanner does not respond when the limited
user account logs in.
Any one out there know how to fix this?

Hi Wilfred,
It's a permissions issue, as the limited account does not havet he =
authority to write to certain system files. This may help:

You may also need to add write priviledges to the =
C:\Windows\system32\spool folder for that account.

Thanks for the information.
I tried the workaround suggested in the article. Unfortunately, Windows
seems to deny access to that shortcut. I get the following error when I try
to grant Administrative access to the program:
"Unable to save changes to 'HP PresicionScan Pro.Ink'. Access is
denied."
I tried searching for the string "C:\Windows\system32\spool" in the registry
to see if there is a value that I can change to add write privileges for
that account. None was found.
Although I tend to agree that it is a permissions issue, I noticed that when
I log on as the limited user, the system notification area shows the scanner
icon with a red "X" over it and the message: "Scanner not responding". This
happens at logon, even before I try launching the scanner program.
Do you think that if I were able to apply the workaround in the Microsoft
Knowledge Base Article, that it would overcome the "Scanner not responding"
error in the system tray?

Hi,
You are trying to grant permissions to the shortcut, you need to grant =
them to the exectuable itself in the program folder. Same thing for the =
spool folder, it's not a string, it is a subfolder in the system folder. =
Drill down using WinExplorer, right-click it and check the security tab. =
If you cannot see the security tab, you need to disable simple file =
sharing in the view tab of folder options.

The executable icon does not give me the option to "run with different
credentials". That option is only in the properties for the shortcut icon
(although the Microsoft KnowledgeBase article says one should "Right-click
the program's file name or shortcut...".
The c:\windows\system32\spool folder does not have a security tab (it only
has General, Sharing, & Customize).
Is this a common problem? Aren't scanners common components of many
computer systems? Shouldn't a scanner be handled by Windows in a way
similar to a printer? I don't have to go through these reiterations for the
printer.
The PC manufacturer (who handles the warranty and tech support for Windows)
blames it on Hewlett Packard and HP says it's a Windows problem. This is
exhausting.

I've seen a similar problem with some applications. Nothing I did could get
it working for limited users only administrators.
I've installed about 20 different applications and games that claim XP
compatibility. Only about half seem to install 'correctly' on a WinXP
machine. The most common fault is that they only set themselves up for use
by the admin account not all-users. I thought the whole point was that even
a single user machine should have two accounts set up (limited and Admin)
and that the Admin account should only be used for that purpose. It's
annoying to install a game only to find it's not added itself to the
desktop/start menu for the limited user account. You end up logging on and
off several times and messing about moving shortcuts from the admin account
to all users etc. Why oh why can't the standard installation wizard present
you with a list of users and ask you which should be given access?
