View Full Version : Desktop refreshes...

On Windows XP Home Edition, my desktop keeps refreshing
everytime i open & close a window. Sometimes when i click
on the Start menu to, my desktop refreshes too. Does
anybody know why this occurs???

This is known as flashing and a small amount of it is normal.

How much memory does your graphics card have or does it share memory with
main system memory. If it shares, regardless of how much you allocate, this
will continue to be an issue. If the card has its own memory then it's a
question of how much memory it has, how much main system memory there is and
possibly the speed of your processor as well.

I'm not quite sure what you are talking about... but I
know i have a S3 Graphics ProSavage DDR and a AMD Athlon
XP 2600+ @ 2131 MHz....

Well, if the graphics card has a DDR designation, it almost certainly has
its own memory, the question is how much memory as well as how much memory
do you have on your system. You may need to check your system documentation
or perhaps the website of the manufacturer might have the information if you
look for your model.

You're talking about the Random Access Memory right? It's
512 MB

Yes and you have adequate. Now, how much memory on that graphics card?

Okay, you'll always have some of this issue, it is part of the nature of
Windows and how it gobbles memory. XP is especially, graphics intensive and
while XP can work fine with even less graphics memory than 32MB, you should
have at least 64MB and if you are gamer, nothing less than 128MB.

You can try turning off some of the eye candy but given the overall
horsepower of your system, a beefier graphics card might reduce some of this
issue. As I said, it won't eliminate it but the memory you have on the
card, the less of this you should see. Obviously, if you have a lot of
things open at once and if at least one or some of these items are
themselves graphics intensive, as you close and open items, you will see the
desktop refresh.
